Carnival party games for adults: costume games for people who have just met

Eight free games for a costume party where half the room is new: five that use our existing games and three that need nothing at all. Each has a quiet-person-friendly tip.

Carnival week 2027: the dates

On this page, carnival week runs from Thursday 4 February to Tuesday 9 February 2027, which is 6 days. Tuesday 9 February is Shrove Tuesday, also called Mardi Gras. Ash Wednesday is 10 February and Easter Sunday is 28 March 2027.

Cities start and end on their own dates (see below), so check the local calendar for a specific event. The games work at any costume party, with or without full costumes: a mask, a hat or a scarf is enough, and everything here is for adults aged 18 and over.

Eight games for a carnival costume party

Costume impostor

  • Players 4 to 12
  • Time 15 min
  • You need One phone and the Impostor party pack
  1. Open the Impostor party pack (it has pairs such as Costume and Mask). Add everyone's name, or their character name for the night, and pass the phone round.
  2. Take turns giving one clue word about your secret word, in character if you like. The impostor has to bluff.
  3. Vote on who the impostor is. The impostor wins by staying hidden, and the group wins by catching them.

Quiet-person-friendly tip: One-word clues need no speech, and you can listen first and vote with the group.

Costume charades

  • Players 4 or more, in teams
  • Time 15 min
  • You need One phone
  1. Open charades and split into 2 to 4 teams.
  2. Choose the Movies and songs and Actions categories. By agreement, add your own characters, such as pirate, jester, superhero or clown.
  3. The actor performs wearing a mask or hat that is passed on after each turn. The team with the most points wins.

Quiet-person-friendly tip: Ask to guess or keep the timer, and act in pairs if you would rather not perform alone.

Two truths and a lie: character edition

  • Players 4 to 12
  • Time 15 min
  • You need One phone or nothing
  1. Everyone picks a character name for the night, real or invented. Open the host helper for prompts and the timer.
  2. Each player introduces themselves by character name and gives two true facts and one lie about themselves.
  3. The group votes on the lie, and the player reveals it. Then the next character steps up.

Quiet-person-friendly tip: Go later in the order so you can hear how others do it, and keep your facts small and easy.

Would you rather: carnival edition

  • Players 4 or more
  • Time 10 min
  • You need One phone
  1. Open Would you rather and pick a deck. Mark the two sides of the room.
  2. Read one dilemma. Everyone walks to the side of their choice, or points to it if the room is small.
  3. Ask one person from each side to explain in one sentence. Then read the next dilemma.

Quiet-person-friendly tip: Choosing a side needs no speech. Explain only when you want to, and anyone can say pass.

Costume bingo

  • Players 6 or more
  • Time 10 min
  • You need Social bingo (General), or paper and a pen
  1. Open our social bingo and give each guest a card. Without phones, draw a 3 by 3 grid on paper.
  2. Walk around the room and ask people for a match, such as someone wearing a mask or someone who has been to a carnival. One name per person.
  3. The first full row, column or diagonal shouts BINGO.

Quiet-person-friendly tip: The first step is to ask one simple question to one person. Every square is a short chat with a clear end.

Guess my costume in 20 questions

  • Players 4 to 12
  • Time 15 min
  • You need Nothing
  1. One player thinks of a character, either their own costume or any character, and keeps it secret.
  2. The others take turns asking yes or no questions, up to 20 in total. The player answers only yes, no or sometimes.
  3. Whoever guesses the character takes the next turn. If nobody guesses in 20 questions, the thinker wins.

Quiet-person-friendly tip: Yes or no questions are easy to ask. If you are the thinker, you only need to say one word at a time.

Mask swap

  • Players 4 or more, in pairs
  • Time 10 min
  • You need One accessory each: a hat, scarf, cape or glasses
  1. Pair up with someone you have not talked to yet. Swap one accessory, such as a hat or scarf. Skip masks that touch the face.
  2. Take 2 minutes each to tell your partner who your character is: name, one habit and one catchphrase.
  3. Wear your partner's accessory and introduce their character to the group, in character, in 20 seconds.

Quiet-person-friendly tip: Your partner supplies the words. You only repeat them, which is easier than talking about yourself.

Three clues and a bow

  • Players 6 to 20
  • Time 15 min
  • You need Nothing
  1. Each guest in turn thinks of a character, either their costume or any character, and gives three clues, from hardest to easiest.
  2. After each clue, the others may guess once. Guessing on clue 1 scores 3 points, on clue 2 scores 2, on clue 3 scores 1.
  3. When someone guesses, the clue giver takes a bow. Play until everyone has given clues.

Quiet-person-friendly tip: You can give clues in a quiet voice from your seat, and guessing is a group effort: you do not have to speak first.

How carnival is celebrated in five places

Short, checkable basics from official tourism or organiser pages. Dates change by city and by year.

Cologne, Germany

The street carnival opens on Weiberfastnacht, Thursday 4 February 2027, at 11:11 am on the Alter Markt. The Rosenmontag parade is on Monday 8 February, and the Cologne tourist board says more than a million people visit for it. On Violet Tuesday evening, many pubs burn the Nubbel, a straw-filled doll, to mark the end of the season.

Venice, Italy

The official Carnevale di Venezia site lists the 2027 carnival as 23 January to 9 February 2027, so it ends on Mardi Gras. The site describes masks as central to the atmosphere.

Basel, Switzerland

Basel's Fasnacht starts on the Monday after Ash Wednesday at 4:00 am, which is Monday 15 February 2027, a week after our carnival week. It begins in the dark, lit by the lanterns of the cliques (carnival groups).

Cádiz, Spain

Andalusian tourism describes the contest at the Gran Teatro Falla: about 20 days, more than 100 groups and four categories (coros, comparsas, chirigotas, cuartetos), with at most four groups per category reaching the final. Chirigotas are known for satire and double meanings. The city itself becomes the stage in February, and costumes are called "tipos" in Cádiz.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Liesa, the league of Rio's samba schools, lists the 2027 Grupo Especial parades over three nights: Sunday 7, Monday 8 and Tuesday 9 February 2027, with four schools each night. Riotur, the city tourism body, lists street bloco registration for Carnaval 2027.

Going alone to a carnival party

  1. A costume is a ready-made opener: ask what the character is and why they chose it.
  2. Offer to run a game that needs one phone. A role makes it easier to join in.
  3. Pick a mask or hat you can see and talk through comfortably, and carry a spare accessory to swap.
  4. Join the pair games first. Two people are easier than a circle.
