Two truths and a lie: host helper

Stuck for statements? Draw a prompt, set the timer and keep score on one phone. Built for icebreakers with new people, with a hard mode for winter holiday and moving-abroad rounds.

Draw a prompt

The storyteller uses the prompt as a starting point for three statements: two true, one invented.

Tap the button to get a prompt.

Round timer

Time for the storyteller to tell the three statements, then the group to question and vote.

How to play in 5 steps

  1. Pick a storyteller. Draw a prompt for ideas, and give them about a minute to think.
  2. The storyteller says three statements about themselves: two true, one invented. Keep the order random.
  3. The group asks questions for a short time. The storyteller answers with a straight face. Start the timer if it helps.
  4. Everyone votes at once on which statement is the lie, for example by pointing on three.
  5. The storyteller reveals the lie. Give +1 to each player who guessed right, and +1 to the storyteller if most of the group guessed wrong. Then the next person goes.

Tips for hosts

  1. Keep it kind. The aim is to learn something fun about each other, never to catch anyone out or to laugh at them.
  2. No secrets that could embarrass anyone: nothing about health, money, exes or family troubles. Fun facts only, and a person may pass at any point.
  3. Include shy guests: let them go second or third, offer to write the statements down, or let a pair tell a round together.
  4. Keep the questions curious and short. Good: where was that? Bad: prove it. Cap each round and move on while the energy is high.
  5. With strangers, start with the Food and Travel prompts. They are easy to share and easy to follow up.

Questions

How do you play two truths and a lie?

One player says three statements about themselves, two true and one false. The others ask questions and vote on the lie. Points go to the players who guessed right, and to the storyteller if they fooled most of the group.

How many people do you need?

At least three, but it works best with five to twelve. In a bigger group, play in small circles or give each person only one round.

Does this page need an internet connection?

No. After the first visit it works offline, and prompts, scores and names are never sent anywhere.
